What makes it stand out is its taste, which is a mix of strawberry, lychee, peach, and pineapple. As the fruit is not that popular in India, you can also grow it in your garden.

Growing mangosteen is easy using seeds and the best time to sow them is in summer. Do remember that it grows at a very slow pace and if you want to enjoy fruiting sooner, then it would be a good idea to buy a well-grown plant from a nursery.

Quick Tips to Grow Mangosteens



For best growth, keep the plant at a location where it gets direct mild morning sunlight for 2-4 hours and bright but indirect light for the rest of the day. Do not expose the plant to the harsh afternoon sun of Indian summers.


The plant grows best in rich organic soil, especially sandy loam or laterite, that is amended with plenty of organic matter.


Remember to provide water only when the topsoil is dry. Do not let the growing medium dry out completely ever.


Mangosteens cannot tolerate temperatures below 5º C, nor above 38º C.


Feed the plant with rotted cow dung manure/ gobar khaad, once in 2 months, instead of using the chemical-based fertilizers from the market, as these fruits are edible.
