How to Grow Jade Plant

Jade plant is a popular type of money plant. You can easily propagate it either from stem cutting or from a single leaf.

From Leaf Cutting

Select a healthy leaf and snip it with your hands, making sure that the bottom of the leaf doesn’t break. In a small planter, take a mix of half potting soil and half vermiculture. Lay the leaf at the top of this mix, while covering its cut node with the soil. Mist it regularly and keep the soil wet, but do not overwater. The roots will start appearing in 3-4 weeks. Once it develops some leaves, you can re-pot it in 5-6 inches pot.

From Stem Cutting

Choose a healthy branch of a jade plant, and snip off 4-5 inches long healthy stem using a sanitized shear. Remove some leaves from it, ensuring that it consists of some leaf nodes. Let the stem dry for 3-5 days. Once dry, dip it in a rooting hormone and plant it in a pot filled with half parts of vermiculture/perlite and potting soil, each. Mist the water regularly, and don’t let the soil dry completely.

Sunlight

Jade plant prefers full sunlight nurturing of 3-4 hours per day for optimum growth, lacking, leading to stunted growth. For indoors, you can keep your potted Jade at the south-east window. The young plant can be kept at partial shade or in bright, indirect sunlight.

Temperature

For better growth, the temperature should range between 65-75 F (18-25 C). If the temperature drops below 50 F (10 C) in winter, bring potted Jade indoors.

Watering

Water regularly during spring and summers, and make sure to let excess water skip through drainage holes. Water it when its topsoil feels dry, but do not overwater. Reduce the watering rate in winters.

Note: If the leaves of a jade plant are yellowing or falling, then it is an indication of water stress.

Soil

A well-draining soil, with a pH around 6-7, is ideal for its growth. For potted jade plants, opt for a mix used for growing succulents and cacti. You can also make your own by mixing 3-parts of potting soil, 2-parts of coarse sand with 1-part of perlite.

Re-potting

If your jade plant is outgrowing, you can re-pot it in a bigger pot during spring and summers. Ensure the soil is completely dry before re-potting and choose two sizes bigger pot than the previous one. Also, ensure to remove any dead or rotting roots from it while transferring.

Pruning

Pruning will make the jade plant bushier and ensure its weight is evenly distributed across all trunks. For better branching, you should prune the plant when it is very small (around 5-6 inches) with a sterile scissor.

Fertilizer

Jade plants in pots do not require much feeding, but for enhanced growth, you can use a water-soluble fertilizer, once in six months, or once in 3-weeks during its growing period. As an organic option, you can prefer liquid tea, fish emulsion, or compost of tea leaves, once in 8-10 weeks as well.

Pests and Diseases

Mealybugs and spider mites can damage the Jade plant. Mealybugs form white patches around the stem and leaf nodes. You can wash them away with a steady stream of water or apply neem oil at infected parts. Avoid using any insecticides on Jade, as it is sensitive to harsh chemicals, and they can damage its foliage. Don’t let your plant sit on waterlogged soil for long, as it can lead to fungal infection.
