Jamun fruits have a beautiful dark violet to black-blue color and have been cultivated in India since 5000 BCE. They have a juicy, sweet-sour taste and have a small drupe at the center too. Jamun is one of the most important berries in India and is cultivated throughout the country.

The country is the second-largest producer of Jamun in the world, with Maharashtra and Gangetic plains of Uttar Pradesh as its largest producing states. Followed by other states like Tamil Nadu, Gujrat, Assam, etc.

Summers make for the best Jamun season in India, and the dense tree is often home to honey bees. But that’s not all. Jamuns have held a special place in Indian Mythology, too. The Indian continent was called “Jambudweep,” – meaning the land of Jambu (Jamun) trees. Today, the name Jambudweep has been given to the Digambara Jain temple in Uttar Pradesh.

Want to grow your own Jamun tree at home and enjoy its delicious berries? All you need are saplings from a nursery, and you can get started. You can use seeds from the fruits too, but they’ll take a lot longer. Once you have the saplings, plant them in the garden. Here’s how to choose a spot and what to do.

Light

You should plant the Jamun trees in a sunny spot. Why? Sunshine is the lifeblood of your Jamun plant, and it will need 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily if you want it to thrive.

Morning sun is good, but the younger trees will need light shade protection for a few years. If you live in an area where there is extreme heat, you should plant it near another tree or give it shade from the afternoon sun.

Soil

Jamun fruits thrive in well-draining, slightly acidic soil (pH around 6-6.5). A good mix is 50% garden soil, 25% coarse sand, and 25% vermicompost or cow dung manure (gobar ki khaad). This mix is perfect for nutrients and drainage, and your Jamun trees will grow strong and healthy.

How are Fertilizers Different from Manure?

Water

You’ll need consistent moisture – but avoid waterlogging. Just water deeply when the top inch of soil dries, which happens every 2-3 days during summer. Might take 1-2 more days in winter.

Once your tree starts fruiting, you’ll need to increase watering a little bit. Mulching around the base will help retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.

Temperature

Jamun is a tropical and subtropical delight, and it loves warm temperatures between 20-35°C (68-95°F). It can also tolerate mild winters down to 10°C (50°F). But you will need to protect young trees from frost and strong winds.

In extremely hot regions, give it afternoon shade or mist the leaves to keep them cool.

Best Jamun Varieties in India

Rie Jamun is the type of Jamun that is cultivated the most. Other Jamun varieties like Badama, Bhado, Jethi, Ra-Jamun, Ashada, and Kaatha, and hybrid varieties like Konkan Bahadoli, Rajendra Jamun 1, Goma Priyanka, Narendra Jamun 6, CISH J-42, CISH J-37 are also cultivated across the country.

Immunity

The Jamun fruit can help make your immune system stronger. This happens due to the presence of Vitamin C and antioxidants, which encourage the growth of white blood cells in the body, thus increasing immunity.

Antibacterial/ Antiviral

Jamuns also have antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral properties. The juice of java plum can help fight many disease-causing pathogens due to its tannin content.

Gastroprotective

The stems and barks of the tree are rich in tannins, extracts of which are useful in the treatment of gastric ulcers. Apart from that, the Jamuns fruits are also low-calorie food, which helps in keeping the gut healthy.

Controls Blood Suger levels

Everyday intake of Jamun juice can help in keeping the blood sugar levels in check. As the juice helps in converting the starch into energy, it is often advisable for diabetes patients to have a glass of it after their meals.

Jamun Care Tips

  • Give your Jamun tree a good prune after fruiting, around February-March, and avoid big cuts. Just get rid of the dead branches or yellow leaves.
  • Patience is key! Wait until the Jamuns turn dark purple. For picking them, twist and pull them with your hands and avoid damaging branches. Morning or evening are best for this.
  • Give the soil around a tree a good mulch. You can go with hay, straw, leaves, shredded bark, pine needles, or coir.
  • You should fertilize your jamun trees with gobbar ki khadi. Apply half during the monsoon (July-August) and the other half in spring (February-March). 2-2.5 kgs is enough.
