Here are some secret Tulsi Care Tips According to an Experienced Maali that will help you to grow this holy plant in all its glory!
Holy Basil is one of the most important plants in Hindu culture and you will find it in most homes in India. If you too have one in your yard and want it to thrive all year round, then follow these Tulsi Care Tips According to an Experienced Maali!
Tulsi Care Tips According to an Experienced Maali
1. The Right Location is the Key
Tulsi ka Paudha grows best where it gets plenty of bright sunlight at all times. According to an experienced Maali, make sure the herb gets a minimum of 5-6 hours of bright and direct sunlight daily.
However, you will also have to keep the plan safe from the harsh afternoon sun of the Indian summer. It won’t mind a little exposure but do not keep it for long hours in the Indian summer afternoon.
2. Water it Correctly
Indians have a habit of doing the morning Pooja ritual and then they pour the water daily into the plant. According to our experienced Maali, this is one sure-shot way to kill the plant by attracting root rot.
Water only when the topsoil feels a little dry to the touch and DO NOT water the plant on daily basis.
3. Pinching the Stems
Pinching the stems of the plant will force it to branch out more stems, which will make it bushier. Pinch the tops of the holy basil plant when they are forming four or six pairs of leaves.
Remove flower buds when they appear to prevent seed growth and help the plant to divert all its energy into growing more leaves.
Note: It is also important to remove the faded, wilted, or discolored leaves to encourage the growth of new and vigorous foliage. Regular removal of old leaves and flower bud keeps the plant healthy.
4. Use the Correct Growing Medium
Do not collect soil from anywhere and then use it to grow the Holy Basil plant. Amend the soil with plenty of coco peat, compost, cow dung manure, a handful of sand, and vermicompost. All of this will ensure the plant grows the best!
5. Keep on Harvesting
Harvesting the plant will ensure it keeps on growing new leaves. The best time to collect the leaves is early morning when the essential oil content in the leaves is the highest.
Note: Do not pull the leaves from the plant as it may damage the stems. Use a pair of scissors for the job.
