Propagating Syngonium Plant

Arrowhead can be propagated through division, air layering, as well as stem-cutting method. The recommended way is to reproduce it through cuttings, preferably in the spring or summer season.

The first step is to choose a 6-8 inches long cutting with visible nodes and two or more leaves on it. Next, cut it a few centimetres below its nodes (the nodes will produce the new roots). Now you can either put this cutting in water and wait for the roots to grow, or directly put it into well-draining potting soil. Place the sapling in a bright spot and keep the soil moist, and your plant will grow well.

Location

Arrowhead plant grows best in moderate to low light conditions. Do not place it under direct sunlight as this might scorch or bleach its leaves. It tolerates bright indirect light perfectly; hence it’s good to keep it in living rooms, on bedside tables, corridors, or hanging baskets.

Soil

Syngonium plant is not picky about soil and grows well in regular potting medium. However, it is prone to root rot, so make sure to choose a well-draining soil.

Watering

This plant loves water and when it doesn’t get enough water, the bottom leaves start to get droopy. Keep it well watered and make sure never let the soil dry out completely.

You’ll have to water it more often in the summer months. Likewise, you’ll have to water the plant more often if it’s in a smaller pot.

Temperature and Humidity

A temperature of 15℃ -27℃ is quite suitable for your Arrowhead plant. It is fond of hot and humid weather. Since it tolerates 40-50% humidity with ease, it’s good to mist your plant daily or use a humidifier.

Fertilizer

For healthier foliage, fertilize the plant once every month with a balanced feed. You can also use cow-dung manure or vermicompost. However, you may want to skip this during the winter months. In winters, the plant slows down its growth rate, and hence it’s better off without any fertilizers.

Pruning

In case you wish to showcase the plant as a compact bush, it is best to prune it regularly.

Nonetheless, the Arrowhead plant is poisonous to cats and dogs and may cause skin irritation in humans. So, to avoid curious noses of your pets from reaching your plant, make sure you prune the long vines.

Re-potting

Syngonium is a quick-growing vine, and it gets tough to repot it once it has become root-bound. Hence, you should re-pot it once every 2 years.

Pests and Diseases

Common pests like spider mites, mealybugs, and scales can travel to the Arrowhead from other plants. In that case, it will be more than enough to use organic pesticides like neem oil on your plant to get rid of them.
