State Tree of Punjab

The North Indian Rosewood, also popular as the Sheesham Tree, is the official State Tree of Punjab.  It is a fast-growing and hardy tree native to the Indian subcontinent and southern Iran. In the right growing conditions, it also grows beautiful white-pink flowers. It can grow up to a height of 80-100 feet.  These shady trees’ young leaves and branches are also used as fodder for livestock.

The Sheesham wood of the tree is popular for making Sheesham wood furniture across all parts of the country.

 How to Grow the State Tree of Punjab?

The State Tree of Punjab is quite easy to grow from both seeds and cuttings. As growing it from seeds can take a lot of time, it is also a good idea to get a well-grown specimen from a nursery and then transplant it into the garden.

Requirements to Grow the State Tree of Punjab

Sunlight

Grow these trees at a location where they get plenty of bright sunlight, a minimum of 5-6 hours every day. Avoid choosing a location that gets shade for the most part, as it will result in leggy growth.

Soil

The tree grows well in almost any kind of well-draining soil. Alluvial soil, mixed with gravel or sandy loam, is optimum for growing Indian Rosewood.

Watering

Water the young plants when the topsoil feels a little dry to the touch. Avoid watering the plant daily. Once it attains a height of 6-8 feet, the Indian Rosewood will take care of its watering needs.

Taking Care of the State Tree of Punjab

Fertilizer

If you have used plenty of organic matter and cow dung compost at the time of planting, it won’t need much feeding. To boost the growth, use a balanced liquid fertlizer once in 2-3 months when the plant is young. When the tree attains a height of 6-8 feet, it won’t need a fertlizer at all.

Pests and Diseases

These trees are prone to termites and fungal infections when young. However, you can get rid of these problems quickly with the help of soap, water, or neem oil solution.
