State Tree of Himachal Pradesh

Deodar, or the Himalayan cedar, is the official State Tree of Himachal Pradesh. This evergreen conifer tree belongs to the Pinaceae family and can grow upto a height of 40-80 feet in the right growing conditions. The tree is native to the Himalayas, and you can easily spot it in the hilly areas of Himachal Pradesh.

How to Grow the State Tree of Himachal Pradesh?

Himalayan cedar is really easy to grow from seeds.

1. Collect the seeds after summers before they turn brown.
2. Soak them in warm water for a day or two.
3. Place the seeds in a zip lock bag and put them in the refrigerator to germinate for two weeks.
4. Plant seeds in a well-draining potting mix, water well, and place the pot in bright but indirect light. The seeds will germinate in 3-4 weeks.

Requirements to Grow the State Tree of Himachal Pradesh

Sunlight

In its native environment, the Himalayan cedar grows in the valleys, exposed to direct sunlight. While growing it in your garden, choose a spot that gets a minimum of 4-6 hours of bright light. Avoid growing it in the shade as it will result in leggy growth and less tree height.

Soil

Deodar cedar trees can be grown in various types of soil types, including loam, sand, and clay, as long as that soil is well-drained. If you plan to grow it in regular garden soil, amend it with cow dung manure and vermicompost to boost the growth.

Water

Keep the soil slightly moist when the plant is young by watering it only when the topsoil feels a little dry to the touch. Once it attains a height of 5-6 feet, it will take care of its watering needs.

Fertilizer

Feed the plant with a balanced liquid fertlizer once in 2 months when it is young. After it grows to a height of 4-6 feet, you don’t have to fertilize it at all.

Pests and Diseases

Giant conifer aphids usually attack the deodar cedar, though these infestations do not usually affect the tree enough to injure it severely. To manage them, spray high-pressure water to remove the pests and then use an insecticidal soap.
