Sunlight

Kaju ka Ped grows best where it gets sunlight for a minimum of 5-6 hours every day. Being native to the tropical regions of the world, these plants hate to stay in the shade.

For the best growth and fruits, make sure it gets plenty of sunlight for the most part of the day.

Soil

These plants do well in the soil with a pH of 5-6.5. You can use regular garden soil but to improve the growth, amend it with coco peat, vermicompost, cow dung manure, and a bit of perlite.

Water

These trees are moderately drought tolerant once mature, but they produce more fruits if watered regularly. During summer, water it weekly or twice and deeply.

Overwatering can harm or even kill your cashew tree, so water only when the topsoil goes a little dry.

Fertilizer

Cashew trees will do just fine without fertilizer. However, if you want to boost the number of fruits, it would be a good idea to apply a handful of cow dung manure every month. You can also feed the plant using a balanced liquid fertilizer, diluted to 1/2 of its strength, every month.

Pruning

Prune cashew trees regularly to remove weak, dead, infested, and entangled branches. Also, cut overcrowded branches to enhance air circulation.

Pests and Diseases

It is generally pest-free if it is in good health. If you spot any pests, use a neem oil solution to get rid of them.

Make sure it gets plenty of sunlight to avoid most of the potential diseases.

Harvesting Kaju ka Ped

Harvest when the cashew turns pink or red. After harvesting, separate the cashew apple from the nut. Unshelled cashew nuts can be stored for up to 2 years.

Do not attempt to break the shell before roasting; the cashew shell contains caustic oil that can burn skin. When processing cashew nuts at home, it is advised to wear gloves and safety glasses.
