What is a Money Plant?

Money plant or pothos is a range of evergreen plants native to southeast Asia. It is an excellent choice for beginners due to its less demanding nature and believed to bring good luck to any household. You can grow these plants as climbing or trailing vine both, and it can grow well in almost any kind of climate. The studies performed in NASA have revealed that the money plant is among the list of plants that removes toxins from the air like benzene, toluene, formaldehyde, and xylene from indoor air. Propagating Money Plant

The propagation of a money plant from cuttings is quite an easy process. You can easily get a healthy plant in any nursery near you grow it by taking the cuttings from a mature plant. Cut a section of 4-6 inches from a healthy plant stem just below the root node. Remove all the leaves at the bottom, leave only a few attached at the top. After this, the cuttings are ready to plant, and you can select water or soil to propagate these cuttings.

How to Grow Money Plant in Plastic bottle?

The process is similar to growing it in any other pot. Here are the steps you need to follow to grow money plants in a plastic bottle.

Requirements

For growing your money plant in a plastic bottle, you are going to need the following:

• A plastic jar or bottle. If possible take bottle with a wide mouth
• Tap water/Clean and freshwater
• Fertilizer (as per the need)

Steps to follow

• Choose a plastic container or bottle in which you wish to grow your plant and wash it properly.
• You should prefer a transparent bottle at the time of starting the plant as this type of bottle will make it easy to monitor the growth of your plant.
• If you are taking water as a growing medium, then take a clean container and fill it with water. Although these plants can perform well in tap water as well, it is advisable to take clean and freshwater. Let your water sit for at least 12 hours if you are using chlorinated water as that will allow the chemicals to evaporate. Then, fill  3/4 of the bottle with this water.
• For soil as a medium, just fill the plastic bottle with ordinary garden soil.
• You can also add fertilizer before planting the cuttings into it. This will enhance the growth and health of the plant. Use an all-purpose fertilizer with a 1/6-1/4 balanced strength. You can also use a liquid fertilizer for your plants.

Note: The following step is not compulsory; it is your choice if you do or do not wish to fertilize the plants. The application of fertilizer is advisable as it helps in the better growth of your plants.

• The bottle is now ready to receive the plant. Take the cuttings and make a slant cut of 45° at just below the node and put the plant from the cut side down.

Self-watering Planter with Plastic Bottle

While growing money plants in a plastic bottle, it gets challenging to use soil as the growing medium, as the plastic bottles usually have a small mouth, So even if you somehow fill the soil, it becomes difficult to maintain the plant. You can, however, cut the bottle into two halves and prepare a self-watering planter for your Money plant.  Here is how you can do it.

Requirements

• One plastic bottle
• A piece of rope
• A marker
• Sharp knife/ cutter
• Potting soil
• Some cuttings from a healthy Money plant
• Water

Steps to Follow

• Choose a plastic bottle of your choice, preferably with a narrow opening, and clean it thoroughly.
• Make a circle around the center of the bottle or a slightly above it and cut the bottle into two with the help of a cutter or knife.
• Fill the bottom part of the bottle with water and keep it aside.
• Take the top section of the bottle and remove the cap from it. Make a hole big enough in the lid to fit the size of rope and put this cap back on.
• Now put the rope into this hole and tie a knot so that the rest of the rope is hanging on the outer side of the bottle.
• Turn the top section of the bottle upside down and place it over the bottom section in such a way that the rope from the upper section drops into the bottom part of the bottle.
• Fill the 3/4 of the top section with some potting soil, pour with some water, and plant the cuttings into it.
• You only need to re-water the plants when the bottom section gets empty.

These planters are best for the time when you are going out of your house for a few days, as these will take care of the water needs of your plants and keep them healthy.
