Jamun ka Ped

Jamun is a popular fruit in India, but its trees are not as common as they used to be. The fruits have juicy flesh outside with a big seed inside. It can reach an impressive height of 50-80 feet in the right growing conditions and cultivates really well in the typical Indian environment.

According to a study by the Department of Botany, Pachaiyappa’s College, Tamil Nadu, India, the plant is rich in compounds containing anthocyanins, glucoside, ellagic acid, isoquercetin, kaemferol, and myrecetin. The seeds are claimed to contain alkaloids, jambosine, and glycoside jambolin or antimellin, which halts the diastatic conversion of starch into sugar.

Another report claims that Java Plum seeds have great potential as a natural antioxidant.

Propagating Jamun ka Ped

The best way to grow Jamun ka Ped is by seeds in summer. Take the seeds and keep them in water overnight. Plant them in a well-draining potting mix the next day. Water well, and keep the pot where it gets plenty of bright but indirect light. It will germinate in 3-4 weeks.

Requirements to Grow Jamun ka Ped 

Sunlight

Climate

Jamun thrives well under both tropical and subtropical climates. It requires dry weather at the time of flowering. Young plants are susceptible to frost. Early rains are beneficial for better growth, development, and fruit ripening.

Soil

Fertilizing

It is advised not to fertilize young Jamun ka Ped, especially if you have used cow dung manure when planting. Once it grows about 1-2 feet, you can feed it once in 5-7 weeks using a balanced liquid fertlizer.

Pruning

Prune Jamun ka Ped in early summer. This will keep it safe from potential diseases. Do not prune the plant in winter when it goes dormant.

Pests and Diseases

Harvesting Jamun ka Ped 

Generally, Jamun fruits start blooming during March and continue up in April in north Indian conditions. These fruits ripen during June – July or with the onset of rain.

To harvest, lay a cotton bedsheet beneath the tree and shake its branches. The ripen fruits will fall and then you can collect them. They taste best when fresh!
