What is Basil?

Basil Leaves are called “Tulasi” or “Tulsi” in Hindi. Some other names of basil is as follows:

Religious Significance of Basil Plant
People grow Basil in tulasikota, which is an integral part of Indian courtyards. People worship the plant and grow it in the courtyard’s center to ward off any dosha and negative energy from the house.
 Tulasi plant was a woman named Vrinda formerly. According to some Hindu scriptures, Tulasi is the wife of Lord Shaligram, an avatar of Lord Vishnu.
Tulasi vivah is celebrated on Prabodhini Ekadashi, where a ceremonial marriage of Tulasi plant with Shaligram or Vishnu avatar.

Major Types of Basil in India
1. Vana Tulasi
Vana basil is indigenous to Sri Lanka, Africa, and India, especially the Himalayan belt. It features bright green, hairy leaves with a strong clove-like scent and spicy-sweet flavor.
Regular consumption of this basil improves the immune system, enhances memory, and keeps cholesterol and sugar levels in check.
2. Krishna Tulasi
Alternatively called Shyama or purple leaf basil, its leaves are initially green but eventually turn purple with age. It is a slow-grower plant with a strong peppery and pungent flavor.
The herb is effective in relieving respiratory infections, insomnia, stress, and anxiety.
3. Kapoor Tulasi
Thanks to its distinctive fragrance, this basil plant keeps pesky insects and mosquitoes away naturally. The bright green leaves of this basil are mildly spicy with some hints of sweetness.
4. Rama Tulasi
This basil is native to Brazil, Nepal, China, and India. It has antibacterial properties that alleviate several skin infections, indigestion and boosts immunity.
