Arjun ka Ped Information

Arjun Tree belongs to the Combretaceae family and can grow upto an impressive height of 55-80 feet. Arjun ka ped also grows lovely flowers with panicle spikes. The tree’s fruit is a fibrous-woody drupe that grows to about 2.5–5 cm.

Arjun ka ped has a flowering season from May to June, while fruits mature from January to March.


Propagating Arjun ka Ped

The best way to propogate this tree is with seeds. 

  • Collect the seeds from fruits. Make sure you are using the fresh ones to grow Arjun ka tree for best results.
  • The best time to propagate Arjun ka ped is summer in India.
  • Soak the seeds in water for 3-4 hours. This will make the outer layer soft, helping in germination.
  • Now, sow the seeds in a pot filled with a well-draining potting mix. You can also sow the seeds directly in the garden.
  • Water well and ensure the seeds get plenty of bright light.
  • Germination will occur in 4-8 weeks.

Location / Sunlight

Arjun ka ped loves to be in direct sunlight and will grow best in it. While growing it in the garden, choose a spot that gets a minimum of 4-6 hours of direct sun. The more light it gets, the better it will be for its growth.

Avoid choosing a shady spot, as it will stunt the growth of Arjun ka ped.

Soil

Arjun tree grows well in alluvial loamy or black cotton soil. Whatever growing medium you pick, make sure it is loose, moist, fertile, and has good drainage and water-holding capacity. River banks, streams, and ravines are its natural habitat. Arjun ka ped also survives in open sunny, and low-rainfall areas.  

However, Arjun ka ped won’t mind thriving in regular garden soil.

Watering

Water the young Arjun tree when the topsoil feels a little dry. Do not water Arjun ka ped daily, and do not let the soil completely dry. Once the tree reaches a height of 5-8 feet, it will take care of its watering needs.

Amend the soil with plenty of organic matter, vermicompost, and cow dung manure at the time of planting to give Arjun ka ped a boost in growth. To help Arjun ka ped thrive, use a balanced liquid fertlizer once in 7-10 weeks.

Also, keep the area around Arjun ka ped weed-free. 

Pests and Diseases

Arjun ka ped is prone to aphids’ attack on the tender leaves and form gallons on them. Spraying neem oil solution or biopesticides like Azadirachtin can control this issue.

Medicinal Properties of Arjun Tree

According to this study, Arjun Tree is widely used to treat cardiovascular diseases, including heart diseases and related chest pain, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. Arjun ka ped is also an anti-ischemic agent and a potent antioxidant preventing LDL, reperfusion ischemic injury to the heart.

This study also claims that Arjun ka ped was widely used in the Indian subcontinent for anginal pain, hypertension, congestive heart failure, and dyslipidemia. Its useful phytoconstituents are Triterpenoids, β-sitosterol, flavonoids, and glycosides, which greatly benefit antioxidant and cardiovascular properties.

Another study claims that Arjun ka ped is also helpful in treating wounds, hemorrhages, and ulcers. The active compounds in the Arjun tree are potent against snail-borne diseases and used as molluscicidal agents.
