What is Rudraksha Tree?
Rudraksha is an evergreen tree that can grow up to a height of 60-80 feet. It is famous for the Rudraksha beads that grow on it. There are about 35 species of this plant available throughout India. But this variety is predominantly available in the region, expanding from the Gangetic plains in the Himalayan foothills. It is a fast-growing tree that can start to bear fruits after 3-4 years of planting.

The plant holds tremendous importance in the Hindu religion. The word “Rudraksha” has its origin in the Sanskrit language. It is made from two words, Rudra (Lord Shiva) and aksha (eye). This means that the auspicious beads are considered the third eye of Lord Shiva. It is an essential bead that people use during prayers.
It is said that Lord Shiva wears a garland of Rudraksha. This garland or mala is often made from 108 rudraksha beads and used by many Hindus during prayers. Moreover, the rudraksha trees found in the Himalayan regions are considered quite powerful. As the Himalaya or Kailash is the abode of Lord Shiva according to the scriptures.

Growing Rudraksha tree, at home, can be an excellent idea, as the tree is not only important religiously, it also has many health benefits. All parts of the tree have one or the other medicinal properties. Apart from that, growing this tree is not difficult and you can easily grow them in your homes just by following these simple steps.
It is always better to buy a healthy plant for nursery. You can also propagate this plant, through seeds, in your garden or pot. All you have to do is to collect the seeds from dried Rudraksha. You have to break them into two as it is vital to open the cover on the outside, as the seeds will not germinate under the hard woody cover.
Choosing a Pot
If you wish to grow your plant in a pot, then pick one that is 18-20 inches deep and at least 7-10 inches wide. Another thing to make sure is that your container must have good drainage.
Using a well-draining soil, rich in compost, is ideal for growing rudraksha plants. You can also use a nutrient-rich, compost-based soil, as these are easily available. It is advisable to use this soil when you are growing your plant in pots. Before putting the soil in the container, make sure you add a good amount of drainage material like gravel, pebbles, etc, at the base of the pot.
The Himalayan states have the best climate to grow this tree, as the temperatures there remain moderate even during summers. In the places where the temperature is higher than 35°C, it is best to keep them under shade. It is easier to put them in the shade if you grow them in the pot. However, if you are growing them in your yard, you can choose a spot under a bigger tree.
Water the plants well. If you are planting Rudraksha in open yards, you can create a little slope to stop the water-logging in the area. Water at least two times in a day in summers and once in others. You do not need to water your rudraksha plant in the rainy season and once they’re established.
Rudraksha Plant Care
You should avoid using chemical fertilizers. Using rotted cow manure is best for your plant. Provide your plant regularly with a good amount of Gobar Ki Khaad, more frequently, when the plant is flowering and fruiting. Besides, you can also use a potash rich fertilizer for your plant.
Pests and Diseases
It is generally free from any kind of pests or disease in tropical and subtropical climates like that of India. But as it tends to absorb water fast, which can lead to root rot and fungal infections. You should avoid wetting the foliage to keep the diseases at bay.
It is advisable to prune your Rudraksha plant when it comes to the height of 8-12 feet. As it will encourage the growth of new branches and help the plant in growing wider rather than taller. Besides, the greater the number of branches, the higher the fruit production of the tree!
