Here are two of the most popular methods to propagate ZZ Plants.

1. From Leaves

  • Take off the leaves from a healthy stem. Make sure not to damage them in the process.
  • Keep the leaves at shade for a couple of hours, so they develop a callus.
  • Now, fill a tray or small pot with a soilless growing medium like cocopeat or a mixture of perlite and peat. Put the end of the leaf half an inch deep into it.
  • Water thoroughly and cover the tray with plastic wrap to avoid water loss.
  • Keep the tray or pot in the bright, but indirect sunlight and mist it regularly.
  • The leaf will form roots in- weeks. You can then transplant it in the container.

2. From Stem Cutting / ZZ Plant Water Propagation

  • Snip off 6-8 inches of cutting from a healthy plant.
  • Dip the end in a rooting hormone and place it in a vase filled with fresh water.
  • Keep it at bright, indirect sunlight, and change the water every week.
  • The cutting will develop roots in 3-4 weeks.
  • Transplant it in a pot when the roots grow up to 1-2 inches long.

Note: You can propagate the stem cutting in a well-draining soil mix too.

Water

The rhizomes or tubers of the ZZ plant retain water, so always check the topsoil for dryness with your fingers before watering the plant.

Soil

The best soil for the ZZ plant is the equal mix of garden soil, cactus mix, and coco coir. Alternatively, you can also use equal parts of potting mix and perlite.

ZZ Plant Care

Repoting

During summer, re-pot the plant if it starts outgrowing the old pot. Keep an eye on the drainage holes, and if you notice roots coming out of it, it’s time to move it to a bigger container.

Fertilizer

Feed the plant with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half-strength twice a year. Do check the label for dosage.
