Mooli in India

Radishes (Mooli) are known for their roots, stalk, and leaves offer several health benefits. They are a rich source of Vitamin C, B6, Potassium, Fibre, Folate, and much more. They are also used for their therapeutic effects on many common diseases ranging from fever, constipation, and high blood pressure, to severe conditions such as jaundice, piles, diabetes, and more.

This healthy vegetable has a sweet, crispy flavor and is extensively used in Indian sabzi, paratha, dal, thepla, and other delicious dishes.

How to Grow Mooli in India

Growing Mooli from seeds is a pretty straightforward process.

  • Choose a spot that receives a minimum of 6-7 hours of direct sunlight.
  • Aerate the soil well upto 8 inches deep. Make sure the soil has a free, well-draining texture.
  • Sow the mooli seeds 1/2 inch deep into the ground.
  • Cover with a thin layer of soil.
  • Water thoroughly and keep the medium moist.

Requirements to Grow Mooli in India

Sunlight

Radishes grow best in full sunlight. They love to get direct daylight for a minimum of 6-7 hours daily. Plants grown in the shade will produce larger leaves but smaller vegetables.

Water

Mooli needs a moist growing medium to thrive well. However, ensure not to make the soil soggy. Do not let the medium go dry as well.

Temperature

The plant loves to be in a tropical atmosphere. The optimal temperature for a healthy radish plant is 10-18 °C.

Soil

The ideal medium for growing mooli must be well-draining loamy soil rich in organic matter with a pH of 6-7. A free-draining medium will help the roots to grow deeper into the soil.


Mooli Plant Care

Fertilizer

Before sowing the seeds, prepare the soil bed with NPK 5-20-10 fertilizer. You may also use bone or kelp meal to boost trace minerals. Refer to the label for dosage. Keep a check on the usage of nitrogen fertilizers as excess will lead to higher foliage growth than root.

Pests and Diseases

Radishes are prone to blight, mildew, white rust, beetles, and aphids. Use an insecticidal spray to remove the potential pests. Also, avoid overwatering to prevent most diseases.


Harvesting Mooli

As radishes can be grown annually, the days for harvest may differ. Spring radishes are ready for harvest within 30 days, while radishes grown in the winter require 50-60 days for harvest due to the general frost layer that covers the soil. Mooli ki Chutney Recipe 

  • Firstly, in a Tawa, heat 2 tsp oil and add 1 tbsp chana dal, 1 tbsp urad dal, ½ tsp cumin seeds, 1 tsp coriander seeds, and three dried red chilies.
  • Saute on low to medium flame until the dal turns golden brown.
  • Add three cloves of garlic, 1-inch ginger, 1 cup radish, and ¼ tsp turmeric, and saute for a minute.
  • Lastly, add 2 tbsp water and mix well.
  • Cover and cook on low flame for 5 minutes.
  • Cool entirely and blend to a coarse paste without adding water
  • Now prepare the tempering by heating 1 tbsp oil.
  • Add ½ tsp mustard, a few curry leaves, and a pinch of hing.
  • Allow to splutter and pour the tempering over mulangi chutney.
  • Finally, enjoy Mooli ki Chutney with hot steamed rice, idli, or dosa.

Mooli Bhaji Recipe

  • Heat a Kadhai on medium heat and add mustard oil. Add cumin seeds, chopped garlic, and ginger. Sauté until spices turn brown or the raw aroma of spices disappears.
  • Add chopped onion and sauté until onions become translucent. Add green chilies and mix well to combine all the ingredients.
  • Add chopped potato and then sauté for 1 minute. Add salt and coriander powder and mix well. Add radish greens and mix well to incorporate all ingredients.
  • Cover and cook for 4 minutes. Uncover and mix well. Add chopped radish and mix well. Cover and cook for 2 minutes and your Mooli Bhaji Recipe will be ready.

Mooli Ka Paratha

  • Firstly, take 2 cups of grated radish in a strainer, mix salt, and leave it on rest for 20 minutes.
  • Then, squeeze the radish juice and add chili, turmeric powder, coriander powder, dry mango powder, and coriander leaves.
  • Mix well, making sure to blend the spices well with radish.
  • To make the dough, firstly, in a large mixing bowl, take 1 cup of wheat flour and add the required salt to taste.
  • Now add water in batches and knead the dough.
  • Finally, cover with a moist cloth and leave it for at least 20 minutes.
  • Then, take a medium-sized ball of dough, roll, and flatten it.
  • Place the prepared radish stuffing in the center.
  • Also, join the pleats and press the creases from the center.
  • Furthermore, sprinkle some flour and roll to a chapati size.
  • Now, place the rolled paratha on hot Tawa and cook for a minute. Add oil/ghee and press slightly.
  • Flip again once or twice till both sides are cooked properly.
  • Finally, serve Mooli Ka Paratha with curd, pickle, or curry.
