Sunburst Succulent Propagation

From Cuttings

Snip off one rosette from a healthy stem and keep it at any shaded place for 2-3 days, so it forms a callus. Fill a pot with a mixture of potting soil and cactus mix. Insert the cutting’s end a few inches deep in the soil. Water thoroughly and keep it at a location that gets bright and indirect sun.

From Seeds

Sow the seeds in a container with equal parts of potting soil and cactus mix. Water thoroughly and keep in bright, indirect sunlight. The seeds will germinate in 12-16 days.

Note: The plant may take several years to bloom.

Sunlight

This succulent does well in both full sun to partial shade. For best growth and color, it needs 6-7 hours of bright sunlight daily. If growing indoors, you can choose any west or south facing sunny window.

Watering

Like other succulents, sunburst responds well to the ‘soak and dry’ watering method. Water the soil deeply and thoroughly until it starts coming out of the drainage holes. But, always let the soil dry out completely before the next watering to prevent root rot.

Soil

Sunburst like well-draining but slightly moist soil. The best practice is to use either sandy, loamy soil, or equal amounts of potting soil and cactus mix. Alternatively, you can also use equal parts of regular potting mix and perlite.

Fertilizer

Feed the plant once 4-6 weeks during its active growth period with a 10-10-10 fertilizer. Make sure to use just half the dose of what is recommended on the label.

Re-potting

Though aeonium rarely requires re-potting, as it has a shallow root system. Still, the plant can be re-potted with fresh potting soil once every two years.

  1. The plant is susceptible to damage by mites or pests. You can use neem oil or soap solution to treat it. But, use it in a minimal amount, as it may lead to discoloration of the foliage.
  2. Avoid using fertilizer in winters.
  3. If you’re growing it in garden soil, improve its porosity and drainage by adding peat moss.
  4. Always go for ceramic or terracotta pots, with at least one drainage hole at the bottom.
