Aeonium Canariense Information

Aeonium canariense is known for its large rosettes of yellow or green leaves and can grow up to 2 feet in height. The leaves are fleshy and can be up to 6-8 inches in diameter, with a smooth, waxy texture.

In summer, Aeonium canariense produces spikes of yellow or green flowers that rise above the rosettes of leaves. These are also low-maintenance plants, requiring only occasional watering and a well-draining soil mix. Aeonium canariense can provide years of beauty with proper care and attention.

How to Grow Aeonium Canariense in India?

Aeonium canariense can be quickly grown with seeds from the nursery. However, they can also be propagated through stem cuttings. Follow these steps for the best growth of your plant:

  1. Take cuttings of stems with rosettes of leaves and root them in soil or water.
  2. Take care that the stem should be taken from healthy, non-flowering branches about 6 inches long.
  3. Allow them to callus over for a day or two, then plant them in a well-draining potting mix or rooting hormone powder.
  4. Place the cuttings in a bright, warm place out of direct sunlight and keep the soil moist but not wet.
  5. New roots should begin to grow within a few weeks, and once they are established, the cuttings can be planted in a pot or on the ground.

Sunlight

It requires bright, indirect light and should not be placed in direct sunlight, as it can cause scorching and sunburn. Aeonium canariense should be placed in an area that receives several hours of bright, indirect light each day, such as a south or west-facing window. In the summer months, it may benefit from an occasional hour of direct morning sun if the temperatures are not too hot.

Water

To keep your Aeonium canariense happy, water it thoroughly but infrequently. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. During the summer months, water every 7-10 days.

During the winter months, you can reduce the watering frequency to every two weeks or so. If you notice the leaves starting to droop or getting yellow, it is a sign that it needs more water.

Soil

Aeonium canariense prefers a slightly acidic, well-draining soil mixture. Mix together one part loam, one part sand, and one part perlite or pumice. For best results, add a small amount of fertilizer to the soil before planting.

Temperature

This succulent is quite hardy and can tolerate a wide range of temperatures. However, keeping the plant in a location where the temperature does not drop below 10 °C (50°F) is best.

Fertilization

As such, it does not require much fertilizer. A balanced, slow-release fertilizer with an NPK ratio of 10-10-10 should be applied at the beginning of the growing season in the spring.

Make sure to follow the instructions on the fertilizer’s label for the correct application rate. Additionally, an occasional dose of liquid fertilizer throughout the growing season can help promote healthy foliage and blooms.

Pests and Diseases

Aeonium canariense is generally a hardy and pest-resistant plant. Still, it can be susceptible to common pests like mealybugs, scale, spider mites and diseases like root rot and powdery mildew. To prevent diseases, it’s essential to provide good air circulation around the plant and to avoid overhead watering. Pests can be attacked with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
