Requirements to Grow State Fruit of Tamil Nadu
Sunlight
The State Fruit of Tamil Nadu requires full and direct sunlight to grow well and produce plentiful fruits. If you want the best growth and number of fruits, choose a spot that gets a minimum of 6-7 hours of direct light every day.
Soil
Jackfruit trees grow well in nutrient-rich soil with excellent drainage. However, the trees are not fussy about the growing medium and will do just fine in regular garden soil. It would be a good idea to amend the soil with plenty of vermicompost and cow dung manure at the planting time.
Water
Jackfruits are tropical plants and like consistently moist soil year-round. When the tree is young, take care of its watering needs by moistening the soil whenever the top layer feels a little dry to the touch. Do it till it grows to about 5-7 feet in heigh. After that, it will take care of its own.
Taking Care of State Fruit of Tamil Nadu
Fertilizer
Fertilize these trees twice a year in the spring and winter with a slow-release granular fertilizer till it reaches a height of 4-5 feet. After that, you don’t have to worry about feeding them ever!
Pruning
Young jackfruit trees do not require much pruning except removing any diseased, damaged, or dead portions. For mature trees, to keep them at a manageable height for harvesting fruit, you can annually prune off the upright branches.
This will encourage more lateral growth rather than vertical growth. Also, remove old branches throughout the tree to improve airflow and ensure sunlight can hit all tree parts. Remember not to remove more than a third of the overall branches.
