What is Royal Palm?

The sculpted look of the trunk and a canopy of palm leaves of the royal palm gives out an artistic impression in the gardens. Belonging to the tropical and subtropical climatic regions, the Royal Palm tree growing zone includes United States, Australia, and southern Asia. It is a tall and straight-growing tree that can grow up to 50-70 feet in height under favorable conditions. The tree is known for its self-cleaning properties, as the dying and yellowing leaves naturally shed from the mature tree.

Botanical Name: Roystonea regia

Common Names: Royal palm, Cuban Royal Palm

How to Grow a Royal Palm Tree from Seed

You can purchase quality seeds from the local vendor, but the fresh seeds collected from the fruit of the palm plant provide the best results. Once the fruit ripens and becomes brown, you can harvest the fruit. Take out the fruit capsule, and let it dry for a couple of days at any shady location. Then, extract the seeds from the fruit capsule and rinse them with water. Soak the seeds in lukewarm water for 24-hours before sowing to loosen the seed coat. Make sure to sow the seeds within 2-weeks, else the seeds will lose their viability.

  • Start with a small 6-inches pot and fill it with a mixture of peat and perlite.
  • Dig a hole in the soil, and sow the seeds around 1/4-inch deep.
  • It is recommended to sow multiple seeds, as not every seed might germinate.
  • Cover the seeds with soil and mist adequately.
  • Place the pot at any shaded location.
  • The seedling will emerge after a couple of weeks.
  • Once the seedling develops 2-3 leaves, you can transplant it into a permanent container.

Watering

The plant is moderately drought, therefore, it can tolerate low watering to some extent. As a thumb rule, water the plant regularly whenever the topsoil feels dry to touch. Make sure to provide additional watering during the dry spells. Once the plant becomes established, it will take care of its watering needs on its own.

Soil

This palm can adapt well to a wide range of soil types, including sandy and salty. But, it is best practice to grow it in loose, well-draining, and fertile soil, so any commercial potting soil will be a great pick. You can also use a mixture of perlite and peat moss. If the soil is clay-like or compact, then consider amending it with compost or cow dung manure.

Climate

This is a tropical plant and appreciates warm temperatures to thrive. So, the temperature ranging from around 25-35 C works well for this palm plant.

Fertilizer

Royal palm should be fed with a water-soluble fertilizer formulated explicitly for palm plants. You can apply the fertilizer once every 2-weeks during the growing phase of springs and summers.

Pruning

The tree is self-cleaning in nature; therefore, the dying leaves naturally fall apart from the tree. However, consider pruning the dead, damaged, diseased leaves or branches from the plant periodically during a young age.
