Tips for Planting Great Garden in the Shade

If your yard or patio doesn’t enjoy direct sunlight, then don’t worry. You can still grow plants by following these great Tips for Planting Great Garden in the Shade!

Here are some of the best tips for flower gardening in India

 Types of Shades

Before making a garden, you need to understand which type of shades you will work with.

Full Shade

If your garden is not getting any direct sunlight due to the obstruction from the tall tree or building, then you can only grow specimens that can thrive in the full shade like snake plants, impatiens, heuchera, ferns, and coleus.

Partial Shade

The area that receives dappled or filtered sunlight through the canopy of a tree, creating a filtered sunlight pattern, is good for plants like mint, cilantro, coral bells, and soapwort, that thrive in partial sun.

1. Plants for Shade Garden

For a groundcover, go for ajuga or wild ginger. For flowers, hostas, certain hydrangeas, anemones, coleus, hellebore, and bleeding heart will be great choices.

Pick veggies that can thrive in partial shade like cauliflower, cabbage, radish, and carrot. Ferns and boxwood can also add an extra texture to the shade garden too.

2. Soil

The soil of the shaded area is water retentive as the absence of sunlight makes the soil damp. Enrich its fertility and drainage by adding an ample amount of organic matter like compost or well-rotted manure, or vermiculture.

If you are going for the container shade garden, then use a standard potting mix.

3. Watering Schedule

Due to the low or absence of direct sunlight, water loss is minimal and takes time. Hence avoid watering the plants frequently, and water only when the topsoil is dry to touch.

4. Arrangement of Plants

Taller plants should be planted at the backside, whereas short, small, or dwarf ones should be planted at the front side of the garden. If you want to grow trailing plants, the wall will be the right place.

Some Additional Tips

5. Add Flowers and Plants with Different Colored Foliage

You can grow golden-hue plants like a sweet flag, moneywort, gold coast juniper that do well in the shade. Grow Japanese barberry, dwarf red leaf plum, and carpet bugle for a coppery-red accent.

These colored plants will add an extra visual appeal with the complementary green foliage.

6. Extra Elements in the Shade Garden

The addition of a curved or straight walkway path adds a bit of character to any garden. Besides, you can use rocks, boulders, or gravels in the garden bed to add more appeal to it.
