What is Cabbage?
Cabbage is a leafy vegetable that comes in green, red, white, and purple colors. Although the plant is a nonnative, it has been naturalized in India and cultivated extensively across the country. It is a biennial and grown throughout the year to meet the higher demands of the vegetable. Cabbage Cultivation in India
Cabbages are extensively cultivated throughout the country as an annual crop. India is the second-largest producer of cabbage in the world after China. The major cabbage producing states in India include West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Bihar, Gujrat, Assam, Jharkhand, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh. West Bengal is the largest producer of them all.
Cabbage Varieties in India
There are many varieties of cabbage that are grown throughout the country. Here is a list of some of the most common cabbage varieties in India that you can grow in your farms and gardens!
1. Copenhagen Market
Introduced in 1909, it is one of the most common varieties of cabbage. The roundhead fruit of this variety is large and weighs 2.5 -3 kilograms. The plants are ready to harvest in 75-80 days after their transplantation.
2. Pride of India
It is a high yielding variety of cabbage, with medium-large size fruits. The weight of a single cabbage is around 1.5-2 kilograms. The average yield is 20-29 tonnes per hectare, with a harvesting time of 75-85 days of transplanting.
3. Golden Acre
One of the earliest varieties of cabbage comes with an average-size bulb. Its average harvesting time is 60-65 days from the day of transplantation, with each bulb weighing 1-1.5 kg.
4. Pusa Synthetic
A variety with a slightly creamy white cover and medium-size heads. With an average yield of 35-46 tonnes per hectare, it takes about 130 days from plantation to reach maturity.
5. Quisor
The heads of this variety are round but slightly flat, and each fruit weighs around 2.5-3 kilograms. The heads are ready for harvest in about 75-85 days from the date of transplantation.
6. Summer Queen
This variety of cabbage has green leaves with a flat and compact head. The average weight of a single head is 1-1.5 kg each. It is suitable for growing in places with hot and humid climates.
7. Pusa Drumhead
It is a late-season variety. The heads are big, with each one weighing around 3-5 kilograms. Due to the larger size, the variety takes longer to reach maturity and requires a long winter to produce a good quality crop.
8. September Early
The heads of this variety come with a slightly flat and oblong shape. The weight of each one is around 3-5 kilograms. It can take up to 105-115 days to reach maturity. September Early has a slight susceptibility towards black rot.
9. Pusa Ageti
This cabbage variety is an F1 hybrid. The heads have grey-green leaves and are medium in size. It reaches maturity in 70-80 days from the date of transplantation, with an average weight of 600 grams to 1.5 kilograms.
10. Pusa Mukta
The heads of Pusa are compact and have loosely wrapped leaves at the top. The weight of each one is 1.5-2 kilograms. The variety is also resistant to black rot.
