How to Propagate Snake Plant

From Division

To propagate from division, take the plant from the pot and remove the excess soil around the roots. Cut the rhizomatous base into 2-3 sections using a sharp scissor. Ensure that each cut section must have 3 rhizomes along with one leaf. Now, plant each one into a separate pot with fresh potting media.

From Cutting

Cut a healthy leaf from the plant and snip it in a V-shape. Let it dry in a cool and shady place so that it can form a callus. Put the leaf in a glass of water so that the bottom 25% of the leaf-cutting remains submerged. Keep it in bright, indirect sunlight and change the water every few days.

The leaf will develop root in around 1-2 months. Once the roots emerge, you can transplant the cutting in the soil.

Sunlight

Snake plant is prized for thriving even in the low light areas and does well in bright, indirect sunlight. Though it can tolerate some direct sunlight, excess of it can harm the leaves.

Watering

Water the soil only when the topsoil feels dry to touch. Pour deeply till the excess comes out of the drainage holes. Refrain from overwatering the plant.

Soil

Any well-draining soil is best for the plant. You can also go for any cactus potting mix or create your own mix by blending one part each of garden soil and peat moss, with two parts perlite.

Climate

The plant does well in the tropical and warm climates of India. Though it does well in the temperature range of 21-33°C, make sure that it does not fall below 10°C.

Care Tips

Fertilizer

The snake plant does not require much feeding. To promote growth, you can use any general-purpose liquid fertilizer, diluted to half of its strength once in 2-3 months.

Pests and Diseases

The snake plant is susceptible to root rot, so avoid overwatering the plant. In case of root rot, take the plant out of the pot, air dry the roots for 2-4 days and re-pot it again using a fresh soil or potting mix.
