Noni is an evergreen fruit-bearing tree native to Southeast Asia and Australasia. Once widely cultivated, the love for it diminished with time, due to the unpleasant smell that the fruit carries. They are 3-5 inches long but irregular in shape and have a yellow-white color. The tree can grow up to an average height of 10-30 feet with thick, dark green glossy leaves. Noni fruit is famous for its medicinal properties. They are also processes and sold as juices and jams. Although the fruit is also known as Indian Mulberry, it is not that commonly grown in the country. Presently, the only state in India that cultivates and industrially process this fruit is Tamil Nadu. But now, with the increasing demand, other states like Jharkhand is also beginning to grow it.


How to Grow Noni Plant

Propagation

Though it is always better to buy a well-grown, healthy plant from a nursery, you can also propagate them by both seeds and cuttings. The seeds can be acquired from any nearby nursery or extracted from the fruit. Germinate these seeds in seedling trays or sow them directly in containers. Speed the process of germination by providing the seeds with extra heat.

You can also propagate the Noni plant through cuttings. For this, take a few, 20- 30 cm cuttings from a healthy plant and root them. Plant these cuttings in small pots until the roots start to grow out of them. Transplant them once the roots are visible.

Season

The best time to plant Noni in the tropical and subtropical climatic conditions of India is the onset of monsoon i.e., in the months of June-October. You can also grow them in irrigated months of January- March.

Soil

This plant can grow in almost all kinds of soils and does not get affected by the salinity or alkalinity of soil. The best results are, however, seen in sandy loam soil. It prefers well-draining and porous soil but can also survive in waterlogged conditions at times.

Temperature

The ideal temperature for growing Noni plant in 20-35°C. However, it can survive in adverse conditions as well. A mature plant can withstand even higher temperatures.

Location

These plants are quite hardy and can survive in various challenging conditions. Grow them in full sun as well as in partial shade.

Irrigation

Once mature, the plant can survive even in drought conditions. But while growing it requires moderately irrigated conditions, make sure to water the plants regularly, especially during the early period, as this will help the plant in establishing itself well.

Prune the disease infected leaves from your plants, during or after the first fruiting. As the plant will get mature, you have to prune them more to keep them in shape.

The bark of the tree can be useful in making a purple-brown dye that is used in doing batik on clothes.

The fruit is also famous as Famine food, as people earlier use to eat it in the times of famine.
