Mythology Behind Shami ka Paudha

In Hinduism, Shami ka ped is worshipped with a mustard oil lamp to cancel the ill effects of Shani dev. Its leaves are the imperative offerings to Lord Shiva and Krishna. Its significance is also cited in Ramayana and Mahabarata’s scriptures, too.

According to one text of Mahabharata, during the exile period, the Pandavas concealed their celestial weapons under Shami ka ped for safekeeping.

Propagating Shami ka Paudha

From Seeds

• Collect Shami ka ped seeds from a local nursery or garden center.
• Soak the seeds 12-24 hours before sowing.
• Carefully scrape the outer seed coat without damaging the embryo.
• Plant it in a potting mix and mist lightly.
• Make sure the seed gets bright, indirect light.

From Cuttings

• Take a 4-6 inches long cutting from a healthy Shami ka ped at a 45° angle.
• Prune the lower leaves and keep the upper ones intact.
• Prepare a pot with equal parts of sand, loamy soil, and compost.
• Dip the cutting in the rooting hormone, and plant it in the pot.
• Mist well and keep the pot where it gets indirect light.
