How to Grow Money Tree

You can propagate the money tree from either seeds or cutting. Seeds have a low success and germination rate, so growing it from cuttings is the fastest option.

From Cutting

  • Snip off 4-6 inches long cutting, with 2-3 nodes, from a healthy money tree.
  • Cut back the leaves from the lower part of the cutting and dip the cut section into a rooting hormone.
  • Plant the cutting in a pot filled with soil-less potting mix.
  • Water the soil uniformly and cover the pot with a plastic bag.
  • Keep the plant in the bright, indirect sunlight.
  • Mist the soil periodically using a spray bottle. The plant will take 4-6 weeks to sprout new roots.

You can propagate the cutting in water as well. Change water 2 times a week, and place it in bright, indirect sunlight.

Note: Most of the nurseries braid the trunks of money trees when their stems are green. You can also train the trunk by twisting ties around the stems to make them grow the way you want. But, do it gently; else, it can damage the plant.

Sunlight

The plant does best in partial or filtered sun. Alternatively, you can provide it with 2-3 hours of morning sunlight. For indoors, you can opt for south or west-facing window. Though the plant can tolerate low lights too, it can make the plant look stretched. Also, rotate the plant periodically to impart uniform sunlight.

Water

Water the plant deeply until it starts coming out of the drainage holes and let the soil dry out a bit before rewatering. The plant is ok with underwatering, but overwatering will kill it.

Tip: It is a good idea to leave the tap water overnight to let excess minerals sink at the bottom.

Soil

Money tree responds well to fast-draining, sandy to loamy soil with 6.0 to 7.5 pH. For pots, you can use a regular potting mix amended with peat moss and sand/ perlite.

Humidity

Since the plant belongs to the tropical wetlands, it is fond of humid environments. To enhance the humidity, fill a shallow tray with water along with some pebbles, and keep the container on top of it. You can also get a humidifier for the plant.

Climate

The plant does well in the tropical climate of India, still, the temperature in the range of 15- 25 C is optimum. If you live in a Northern region, locate the plant at any warmer place in case of drafts or if the temperature drops significantly in winters.

Pruning

Using a sanitized shear, cut back any diseased or broken branches or yellow leaves. Also, make sure to snip off any excessive growth at the base of the stem. You can also cut back some larger leaves from the bottom of the plant to prompt new growth.

Fertilizer

During springs and summers, the plant is in active growth mode. Feeding it with a balanced fertilizer, diluted to half the strength once a month, will boost the growth. Do follow the instructions on the label. Stop feeding the plant in winters.

Re-potting

The plant should be repotted every 2-3 years when its roots start becoming overcrowded in the container. Use one size larger pot and fresh potting mix for repotting.

Pests and Diseases

The plant is susceptible to the mealy bugs, scale, and aphids attack. You can knock them off by a strong jet of water or apply neem oil solution or alcohol using cotton balls to get rid of them.
