There are two famous species of this genus Madhuca Indica (syn. Bassia latifolia) and Madhuca longifolia (syn.Brassica longifolia). These trees have a rough bark and exude a white milky sap when cut. In the right growing conditions, the tree can achieve an impressive height of 20-50 feet. Being native to tropical and hot places in India, Mahua ka Ped grows best in full sun.

Extensive studies show the presence of secondary metabolites like sapogenins, triterpenoids, saponins, flavonoids, and glycosides in the tree. Conventionally, it has been used to treat infections, wounds, rheumatism, heart disease, diabetes, and many other disorders.

Another study by the Agricultural Biochemistry Department, Egypt, states that mahua butter is rich in nutritional value, biological activities, and antioxidative properties. In consideration of potential utilization, detailed knowledge of the chemical composition, nutritional value, and industrial applications of mahua butter is of major importance.

A study also claims that the leaves of mahua are used in the treatment of eczema, wound healing, anti-burn, bone fracture, anthelminthic, emollient, skin disease, rheumatism, and headache. The flowers as a tonic; bark for rheumatism, chronic bronchitis, and diabetes mellitus.

Sunlight

Being native to India, this tree grows best in plenty of sunlight. So, choose a spot that gets a minimum of 5-6 hours of direct sunlight every day. Growing it in a shaded location will result in low height and no fruits.

Water

You need to take care of watering when the plant is young, Water when the topsoil feels a little dry to the touch. Do this till Mahua ka Ped grows about 5-6 feet tall. After that, it will take care of the watering requirements on its own.

Soil

The tree is not fussy about the growing medium and will do just fine in regular garden soil. If you want to boost the growth, add plenty of organic matter, vermicompost, cow dung manure, and coco peat in the soil at the time of planting.

To maintain the shape, snip away dead and damaged stems and leaves from time to time, especially when the tree is young, Once it grows, you don’t have to worry about pruning.

Pests and Diseases

Mahua ka Ped may be affected by spider mites, mimosa webworms, mealybugs, thrips, aphids, and scales when it is young. Use non-toxic horticultural oil to get rid of them. As the plant will grow, it will take care on its own.
