How to Grow Crassula ovata?

From Leaf

Pluck a healthy leaf and let it dry for a few days in a warm place to form callus. Then, plant the leaf in a pot filled with well-draining potting mix. Mist the soil well, and place the pot in indirect, bright sunlight.

From Stem

Snip off 3-4 inches long cutting. Let it dry for a few days to form a callus. Then, plant the stem upright in a well-draining potting mix. Water well, and locate the pot at any bright, warm spot.

Sunlight

Choose a place where the plant can receive 4-5 hours of direct sunlight.  For indoors, opt for an east-facing windowsill. The more sun it gets, the better it will be for its growth.

Watering

Jade retains water in leaves, thus can bear drought for several days. Avoid overwatering the plant, as it can do more harm than good. Water the plant only when the topsoil is completely dry.

Temperature

Jade can do well in an 18-25 C temperature range, but consider moving it indoors once the temperature drops below 10 C.

Soil

Like most other succulents, the jade plant requires fast-draining and porous soil. Opt for a potting mix specifically designed for succulents and cacti. You can also DIY mix by blending two parts of sand, two parts of garden soil, and one part of perlite or pumice.

Fertilizer

Jade is not a heavy feeder, but fertilizing with a balanced liquid fertilizer, diluted to a quarter of its recommended strength, once in 6-8 weeks, works wonders. Stop feeding during winters, as the plant goes into dormancy.

Pests and Diseases

Be careful of spider mites, mealybugs, and aphids. Apply neem oil or soap solution to get rid of them. To save the plant from most of the potential diseases, avoid overwatering.

Quick Care Tips for Crassula Ovata

1. Leaves Dropping

When the succulent is exposed to extremely hot temperatures, the plant will likely drop its leaves. Provide shade during scorching Indian summers.

2. Foliage Turning Yellow

Yellowing leaves are an indication of underwatering. Though the plant can withstand a few days of drought, it is good practice to water the plant whenever topsoil feels dry.

3. Leaves Turning Squishy and Dropping

If you spot the leaves turning mushier, or translucent, then it is a clear sign of overwatering. Stop watering for a couple of days. Let the growing medium dry out completely. You can also re-pot the plant using fresh potting soil
