Here’s everything you need to know about growing Red Bamboo in India
How to Grow Bamboo in Pots
- Choose a bamboo cane that is at least 1-2 years old with a 1-inch diameter for propagation.
- Snip it off into culm sections with two to three nodes.
- Plant the cutting in a pot filled with a well-draining growing medium.
- Keep the soil moist and keep it at a spot where it gets bright light.
If you want to save time, it is a good idea to get a well-grown plant from a nursery. Seabreeze, Multiplex Hedge, Fargesia, and Buddha Belly are some of the best bamboo varieties for pots.
Best Pot Size for Growing Bamboo
Go for a container that is around 15-18 inches deep and wide. Prefer a pot that is made from terracotta or ceramic. Make sure it has a drainage hole at the bottom.
Growing Requirements of Bamboo in Pots
Sunlight
The plant will grow best in direct sunlight for 3-4 hours. Keep it near an east or south-facing window. If you want the plant to do well, make sure it gets plenty of sunlight throughout the day.
Water
Bamboo prefers consistently moist soil. Water it deeply whenever the topsoil feels a bit dry to touch. Water it from the base without spilling the water on the leaves.
Soil
It requires well-draining, fertile, and slightly acidic soil for optimum growth. You can also go for a well-draining and pre-mix growing medium.
Climate
The tropical climate of India offers the best condition for growing bamboo.
Taking Care of Bamboo in Pots
Pruning
Avoid pruning the canes during the first year of planting. Snip off the dead culms from time to time. You can also trim it to maintain its size and shape.
Re-Potting
As the plant is a relatively fast grower, you may have to re-pot it once every 2-3 years. Make sure that you use a fresh potting mix while repotting.
Fertilizer
Use a 21-5-6 fertilizer as the plant loves nitrogen. You can also go for a balanced feed, once in 6-8 weeks. Do refer to the label for dosage and instructions.
Pests and Diseases
Take care of aphids, mealybugs, and scales. You can easily deter them by a strong jet of water. To prevent most of the potential diseases, avoid overwatering the plant.
