How to Grow Grapes at Home

You can either get a sapling from a nursery, propagate the plant via cutting, or sow seeds. But if you’ll grow it from seeds, it might take as long as six years for it to bear fruit. We recommend either buying a sapling or using cuttings. 

From Cuttings

1. Take at least 4-7 inches of cutting from a soft and green stem with few nodes from a healthy plant, right before the growing season, which is monsoon in India.
2. Take off the lower leaves and dip the end in a rooting hormone.
3. Plant the cutting in a pot filled with a potting mix.
4. The cuttings will form roots in 10-15 days. Once the cutting is established and develops sets of leaves, you can transfer it to the garden.

Supporting the Vine

The newly grown plants will take about two years until they grow branches. It is vital to support/stake them so that they receive proper sunlight and air, and it is easier to prune them and harvest them.

You can either use an arbor for shade or use bamboo sticks to support the vine. You will have to add more support to the plant before the fruiting as the weight of the fruits will make the branches droop.

Growing Requirements for Grapes

Location

Choose a spot where the plant can get maximum sunlight every day – a minimum of 5-7 hours would be great. It will result in the best growth and maximum fruit production.

Soil

Grapes can grow in a range of soils and do best in well-drained, sandy-loamy soil with a pH between 6.5-8.7. It’s ideal to have 10% calcium carbonate and up to 20% lime concentration in the soil mix.

Watering

Irrigation depends on many factors, like the variety of grapes, soil type, monsoon pattern. But in general, water the plant every few days when the topsoil feels dry to touch. In winters and monsoons, the watering can be delayed or skipped. Moreover, you should decrease watering during fruiting time for better quality yields.

Temperature & Humidity

Grapes thrive well in areas where the temperature ranges from 15-40℃. High humidity during the fruiting season gives a more bountiful crop as it promotes their size and number.

Fertiliser

When the plant is young, you should fertilize it with a 10-10-10 blend. It is an excellent choice and will give it all the nutrients it needs for proper growth. For dosage and instructions, refer to the label.

Pruning

If the vines get too long, then the fruits at a distance might not receive enough nutrients and sunlight, resulting in poor growth. Hence, it is good to regularly prune the long and non-flowering vines off of your plant. Pruning should be done in the winter season while the plant is still dormant.

Pests & Diseases

The main pests that bother grape plants are thrips, wasps, flea beetles, and powdery mildew. Occasional use of neem oil solution will keep them at bay.

You can use cow urine mixed with ten parts of water to protect the plant from bacterial and fungal situations. If you keep the plant in a sunny location with proper air ventilation, you can avoid most of these problems.
