State Fruit of Tamil Nadu

The official Tamil Nadu state fruit name is Jackfruit. It is one of the largest fruits in India and is native to the Western Ghats of the country. The flesh of Jackfruit is consumed as curries and boiled forms, while the flesh can be eaten directly as a fruit when it is fully ripe. The tree grows upto 30-70 feet tall, and its fruits average between 10 and 40 pounds, though some have been known to weigh 80 pounds or more.

According to a publication, in addition to its ripe fruit, which has a unique flavor, the jackfruit seed is widely consumed as a dessert or an ingredient in Asian culinary preparations. The jackfruit seeds are used in cooked dishes, and their flour is used for baking.

Jackfruit seeds are fairly rich in starch. Mature jackfruits are cooked as vegetables and used in curries or salads. Ripe fruits can be eaten raw or cooked in creamy coconut milk as a dessert, made into candied jackfruit or edible jackfruit leather. In India, the seeds are boiled in sugar and eaten as a dessert.

Sunlight

The State Fruit of Tamil Nadu requires full and direct sunlight to grow well and produce plentiful fruits. If you want the best growth and number of fruits, choose a spot that gets a minimum of 6-7 hours of direct light every day.

Soil

Jackfruit trees grow well in nutrient-rich soil with excellent drainage. However, the trees are not fussy about the growing medium and will do just fine in regular garden soil. It would be a good idea to amend the soil with plenty of vermicompost and cow dung manure at the planting time.

Water

Jackfruits are tropical plants and like consistently moist soil year-round. When the tree is young, take care of its watering needs by moistening the soil whenever the top layer feels a little dry to the touch. Do it till it grows to about 5-7 feet in height. After that, it will take care of its own.

Taking Care of Jackfruit Trees

Fertilizer

Fertilize these trees twice a year in the spring and winter with a slow-release granular fertilizer till it reaches a height of 4-5 feet. After that, you don’t have to worry about feeding them ever!

Pruning

Young jackfruit trees do not require much pruning except removing any diseased, damaged, or dead portions. For mature trees, to keep them at a manageable height for harvesting fruit, you can annually prune off the upright branches.

This will encourage more lateral growth rather than vertical growth. Also, remove old branches throughout the tree to improve airflow and ensure sunlight can hit all tree parts. Remember not to remove more than a third of the overall branches.
