How to Plant Salad Patta at Home

The best way to grow a Salad Patta is by buying its seedling from a nursery. Alternatively, you can also regrow it from the stem.

Remove all the leaves from the stem and put them in a shallow dish of water or a container with a potting mix. Keep it on a sunny windowsill and change the water every 3-4 days if you grow it in water. The new shoots of Salad Patta will appear in 10-15 days.

Growing Requirements of Salad Patta

Sunlight

Keep Salad Patta at a location where it can get 4-6 hours of sunlight daily. Morning sunlight with afternoon shade will also do great for the plant. Do not keep the plant in a complete shade as it will result in a smaller vegetable.

Water

Like other salad greens, it’s essential to maintain even soil moisture for Lettuce. If the soil gets too dry, Salad Patta might bolt, which turns the leaves bitter.

It’s best to water when the topsoil goes a little dry to the touch. Also, make sure the growing medium is never going dry completely.

 Soil

Lettuce responds well to well-draining soil. For best growth, amend the soil with a handful of cow dung manure, coco peat, and vermicompost at the time of planting. The plant does best in pH levels of 6.0 to 7.0

Fertilizer

If you have used cow dung manure when planting, salad patta will do just fine without fertlizer. Use a balanced fertilizer such as 10-10-10 when the seedlings are 3-5 inches tall to boost the growth. Do it once in 5-6 weeks. Do refer to the label for instructions.

Pests & Diseases

Lettuce typically doesn’t get affected by any pest or disease problems.

Common pests that might afflict Salad Patta include aphids, slugs, and snails, as well as wildlife nibbling on the leaves. Use a neem oil solution to get rid of them.

Diseases include powdery mildew and downy mildew. Do not overwater salad patta, and make sure it gets plenty of sunlight and air circulation to avoid these issues.

Lettuce vs. Cabbage

Both lettuce and cabbage varieties grow in heads with layers of leaves.

Cabbage typically has a more pungent flavor, while lettuce is very mild. However, cabbage tends to be tougher than Salad Patta because it has lower water content.

Harvesting Salad Patta

Once the Salad Patta reaches a height of 5-7 inches, you can harvest it. The best time to do it is in the morning. If you want it to grow again, cut it above the base or crown.
