How Many Kinds of Spinach are There?

There are majorly three Different Types of Spinach – Savoy, Semi-savoy, and Smooth-leaf.

1. Savoy

Also known as curly-leaf spinach, savoy features dark green and curly leaves that have a crunchy texture. As it has a bitter flavor, this green is less used in salads and is mostly cooked. There are two main varieties:

  • Regiment– It produces thick, large leaves in an arrow shape. This variety grows pretty fast in 35-40 days.
  • Bloomsdale– It has thick leaves and can easily survive cold temperatures.

2. Semi-Savoy

Semi-savoy is bolt and disease-resistant and has an upright growth habit. The leaves have a crisp flavor and are also flatter as compared to savoy, which makes it easy to clean.. There are mainly four varieties of semi savoy:

  • Tyee– This semi-savoy is resistant to bolting and downy mildew disease. It has vigorous and upright growth habit. Tyee features dark green leaves and is best suited for mild winter areas.
  • Catalina– Has a pretty fast growth rate and is also bolt resistant. Leaves are crunchy and are ready to harvest in 50-60 days.
  • Indian summer– It can be grown in any season and takes around 40-50 days to harvest.
  • Teton– Is a bolt-resistant variety and has deep green and oval leaves. Teton takes 40-45 days to harvest.

3. Smooth Leaf Spinach

This spinach has smooth leaves that have a tender, slightly sweet flavor. It is also one of the types that’s also sold as canned. Its two main varieties are:

  • Space– Is slow to bolt and takes around 45-55 days to grow. It is resistant to downy mildew.
  • Red Cardinal– Has red veins and stems. The plant gets ready to harvest in 30-40 days.

1. Malabar Spinach

A member of the Basellaceae family, Malabar is resistant to typical Indian rainfall. It has a mild, smooth flavor and you can harvest it within 55-70 days from sowing.

2. New Zealand Spinach

Tetragonia expanse has thick and crisp leaves that go well in salads. Like Malabar, it is fond of warmth. The plant spreads vigorously, so give it a lot of space while growing.
