You will be surprised to know that Raspberries are a distant cousin of roses! As these are not a common sight in India as the other fruits and can also be quite expensive, it makes a lot of sense to grow them in the garden. The best part is, if you live in a city like Mumbai, Bangalore, or Delhi, you can easily grow them in containers on your balcony too!

These berries are rich in vitamin C, supporting the immune system and preventing infection. They also contain dietary fiber to prevent your body from dangerous diseases.

How to Grow Raspberries in India?

Though you can grow the plant from seeds, it will take a lot of time for it to come to the fruiting stage. To save yourself from that effort and wait, it is always a good idea to get a well-grown specimen from a local nursery or a garden center.

Requirements for Growing Raspberry Fruit in India

Location / Sun

The most important thing for this plant to produce plenty of fruits is sunlight. Make sure it is exposed to a minimum of 3-5 hours of direct sun every day.

Remember, if you will keep it in a shaded spot or a location that doesn’t get much light, then it will fail to fruit.

Soil

Amend the growing medium with plenty of compost, coco peat, and cow dung manure. This will give a head start to the plant, helping it to grow fast and fruit better. You can also go for a well-draining DIY potting mix available in the market if you are growing it in pots.

Watering

The plant needs plenty of water to produce juicy berries but that doesn’t mean you should end up overwatering the plant. Keep a close eye on the soil and water when the top layer of it feels a little dry to touch.

Also, never let the growing medium dry out completely as it will result in smaller berries.

Using a layer of mulch will also help to retain the needed moisture in the growing medium.

How to Take Care of Raspberries?

Fertilizer

Feed the plant with a balanced liquid fertilizer, diluted to half of its strength, once at the time of planting. When the plant reaches a height of 2-3 feet, fertilize it once in 3-4 weeks. Do refer to the label at the fertilizer package for instructions.

Support

Use a bamboo stick or a plastic pipe to support the stems of the plant that can get quite heavy at the time of fruiting. Giving support will keep the stems off the ground, helping them to be healthier and more productive.

Pruning

Prune dead and damaged stems and leaves from time to time. Do not pull them by hand – use a shear to do the job. Also, take away the bushy growth to ensure the sunlight reaches every part of the plant.

Once the plant is done fruiting, snip the branches to ground level as the old ones will not fruit again.

Pests and Diseases

Be careful of spider mites, beetles, and aphids. Pick them with your hands, use a water jet, or take the help of neem oil solution. Also, be careful of the birds! They love to eat these juicy berries!

Keep the plant well ventilated and make sure not to water the foliage to keep potential diseases at bay.

Harvesting Raspberries

Pick the berries when they develop a deep color and feel soft/tender to touch. You can also pick a few and taste them to know whether they are ready or not.

Raspberries taste the best when they are fresh. You can store them in the fridge for 7-10 days. Avoid keeping them in a deep container as they can crush each other.
