Sunlight

Rajma plant grows well in bright light so keep the plant where it can get 3-4 hours of direct sun. Avoid keeping the plant in the shade as it will result in little or no beans production.

Water

The plant prefers slightly moist soil at all times. Never let the soil go completely dry. Water the plant when the top 2 inches of the growing medium feel a bit dry to the touch.

Soil

Grow it in a well-draining, porous, and moderately fertile soil with a pH between 6-7. You can use loamy soil with a good amount of compost or aged cow dung manure. For pots, it’s better to use standard potting soil especially recommended for vegetables.

Climate

The tropical climate of India is great for the plant’s growth. The plant does well in the temperature range of 15-35 °C.

Taking Care for Rajma Plant

Fertilizer

Beans plant works as a nitrogen fixer in the soil, so avoid using a fertilizer high in nitrogen, as it will lead to more foliar growth with fewer beans production. Use a balanced feed once in 4-5 weeks during the growth period. Do refer to the label for dosage and instructions.

Mulching

Add a thin layer of organic mulch like shredded leaves, grass clippings, straw around the base of the plant. It helps to prevent water loss and keeps the temperature cool at the roots.

Support

If you have grown the vining variety, then the plant will require support to climb. So, use poles, stakes, or trellis to train the vine.

Pests and Diseases

Rajma plant is prone to aphids, slugs, and fungal diseases like powdery mildew. Use neem oil solution to get rid of the pests and avoid overwatering the plant.

Harvesting Rajma Plant

The beans of the plant take around 120-130 days to mature from the planting. Take out the entire plant from the pot or garden soil, hang it upside down in a dry and shady space for a couple of days.

The beans pod will open up naturally once they dry out. Collect the seeds and store them in an air-tight jar for up to one year.
