How to Grow Moss at Home?

Growing Moss in a Container

• Take a small container and fill an inch of the bottom layer with the pebbles.
• Place an inch of granulated charcoal on top of pebbles.
• Top it up with 1-2 inches of regular potting soil.
• Once done, mist the soil thoroughly with a spray bottle.
• Place a sheet of moss on the moist growing medium.
• Mist thoroughly and place the container at a location where it gets bright indirect light. The moss will start to grow in 4-6 weeks.

Growing Moss with Slurry for Bricks and Rocks

• Mix 2 cups of buttermilk with one and a half cups of fresh or dried chopped-up moss.
• Make a slurry by mixing them in a blender.
• Allow the mixture to settle for one to two days at room temperature to create spores.
• Using a brush, coat rock or bricks with the slurry and mist lightly. Do not overwater; otherwise, it will wash away the spores.
• In about 6-weeks, the moss will start to grow.

Taking Care of Moss

1. Moss requires ample moisture, Mist it 2-3 times a week or whenever they feel dry to touch.
2. Do not fertilize.
3. Always keep them in a well-ventilated area. Providing them 2-3 hours of mild morning sunlight will do wonders for their growth.

Significance of Moss

Sphagnum moss is an integral part of potting mix used for growing plants. Moss is beneficial for ecological balance, as they help in water purification by filtering heavy metals from water. It also helps to prevent soil erosion.
