Propagating Arabian Jasmine / Mogra

Mogra can be propagated by seeds, stem cuttings, as well as ground layering. However, growing it from cuttings is the easiest way. 

• The best time to propagate Mogra is in the rainy season.
• Snip off a 6-8 inches long cutting just below the leaf node from a healthy plant with a new branch.
• Remove the lower leaves and any buds or flowers from the stem.
• Dip the end in a rooting hormone and directly pot it in a small container.
• Water well and avoid keeping it in direct sunlight.

 Growing Requirements of Mogra

Location

Mogra plant prefers a location where it gets full sun to partial shade during the growing season. Once established, it will enjoy the sunlight for abundant blooms. 

Soil

Watering

The Mogra plant likes to stay moist. If you find the top two inches of the soil getting dry, water the plant. However, never water the plant if the soil is still moist, as over-watering the plant may cause root rot.

Increase the watering during the summer months, since it starts to bloom at that time. Likewise, cut down watering in winters.

Temperature & Humidity

Since it’s a tropical plant, Mogra loves a warm climate and can tolerate a temperature in the range of 5℃-26℃.  A humidity of 50%-80% suits Mogra best. Keeping the pot on a pebble tray filled with water will help in maintaining humidity.

Fertilizer

Once it has matured, you can feed it 3-4 times per year. During the growth period, fertilize it with a balanced liquid feed, diluted to half of its strength. Before the plant starts to bloom, give it a light dose of phosphorus-rich fertilizer that’ll help it to bloom. Do follow the instructions on the label. 

Pruning

Since the Arabian Jasmine is a natural vine, it needs regular pruning. Especially if you want to grow it as a shrub, you should prune the plant when it stops flowering. Cut off the stems that look unhealthy and brown. Also, make cuts above nodes and buds, as this will help the plant grow bushier.

Pests & Diseases

Mogra plant is susceptible to pests like aphids, spider mites, whiteflies, and black scale insects. To remove these pests, you can cut off the affected parts and spray the plant with a fungicide like a neem oil.
