How to Propagate Philodendron Xanadu

From Division

You can divide a well-grown plant to multiply. Take the plant out of the pot carefully and separate the root ball into 2 or 3 sections using a sanitized knife. Once you have divided the root clumps into sections, plant each one into separate pots filled with potting mix.

From Cutting

Snip off 3-4 inches long side shoot or stem from the plant and remove all the bottom leaves. Now, apply some rooting hormone at the cut section and plant it in a container filled with potting mix. The new roots will appear within 3-4 weeks.

Note: As a best practice, always purchase a well-grown plant from a nursery.

Sunlight

This plant does well in bright but indirect sunlight and appreciates some morning direct sunlight. For indoors, keep it at a south-facing window, as less light can make the plant go stretch towards the light source. However, do make sure that it is not exposed to the harsh afternoon sun.

Water

As a thumb rule, water the plant when the topsoil feels dry to touch. Water it deeply until it starts coming out of the bottom holes. Also, make sure to let the soil dry before the next watering. Cut down the watering rate during winters.

Soil

Any well-draining potting mix will be best for the plant. You can also DIY the same by mixing equal parts of parts peat or coconut coir, perlite, and compost.

Temperature

The plant does well in the day time temperature of 24-28°C with a night temperature of 18-21°C.

Humidity

Philodendron Xanadu is fond of high humidity, but it will also do well in the average temperature of Indian homes. To aid its growth, keep a tray filled with water beneath the container.

Fertilizer

Use a balanced fertilizer like 10-10-10, diluted to half of its strength. Refer to the label for instructions. Avoid feeding the plant in winters.

Re-potting

The plant should be re-potted as soon as it starts becoming root bounded, or when the roots start coming out of the drainage holes. Re-pot the plant with fresh potting soil and choose a pot that is at least 2-3 inches larger than the rootball.

Pruning

Philodendron does not require any regular pruning. Just snip away any yellow or damaged leaves from time to time.

Pests and Diseases

The plant is rarely attacked by pests but may be susceptible to mealybug and aphids. You can knock them off by using a strong jet of water or apply neem oil or soap solution to deter them away.
