1. Choose a Bright Location

Pick a bright spot where the plant can receive 4-6 hours of full sunlight. For indoors, a south-facing windowsill or windowbox would be an ideal choice as it will help the flowers to blooms happily.

Note: Some varieties like Henryi, and Jackmanii do well in partial shade too!

2. Give it the Right Support

Most clematis varieties tend to climb. Avoid growing it near a wall as the stems are short, and they wrap and coil themselves on the support; trellis or poles are the best for this.

3. Prune the Plant Regularly

Pruning helps in keeping the plant’s growth bushy, robust and helps in blooming. You can prune the vine according to the shape of your choice. The best time for pruning is late summer, once all the flowers have bloomed. Also, prune back all the diseased and weak branches from time to time.

4. Choose the Correct Soil

The plant prefers well-draining, rich, and loamy soil that is slightly acidic in nature. Also, use organic mulch like shredded leaves or compost to keep the soil temperature even and cool. However, do ensure that the layer of mulch is a few inches away from the bottom stem.

5. Keep a Check on the Watering Schedule

Clematis likes slightly moist soil to thrive. Water the plant when the topsoil feels dry to touch but avoid overwatering. The topsoil must dry out a little between waterings as it will help to prevent wilting of the vine and stem rot.

6. Pests and Diseases

The plants may get attacked by aphids, whitefly, and mice. Use a neem oil solution to a strong jet of water to keep them away. Poor air circulation is another cause of diseases, so make sure the soil is well aerated and draining.

7.  Feed the Plant

Apply 5-10-10 or 10-10-10 fertilizer once 4-6 weeks in the growing season. Always remember to wet the soil thoroughly before feeding. Spring to mid-summer is the ideal time to fertilize these beauties.
