Alocasia Silver Dragon

Quite a rare specimen, the Alocasia Silver Dragon showcases silvery textured leaves that have a certain sheen to them. The plant is a part of the Jewel Alocasia series and is named like this because of the textures on the foliage that resemble dragon-like scales.

How to Grow Alocasia Silver Dragon in India?

The easiest way to propagate Alocasia Silver Dragon is through division in summers. Take out the plant from the pot, divide the clumps from a tuberous bulb using a sharp knife, and plant them in separate pots in well-draining soil.

Water well and keep the plant where it gets plenty of bright but indirect sunlight.

Sunlight

If you want the best color then ensure the plant gets plenty of indirect sunlight. Do remember that it is quite sensitive to direct sun exposure as it burns its leaves. Find the sunniest window and keep it 2-3 feet away from it.

Avoid keeping the plant in complete shade or darkness.

Soil

Go for a well-draining potting mix. If you are using regular garden soil, then amend it with organic matter, perlite, and compost. You can also add a handful of coco coir to help with the drainage.

Water

As the plant is quite susceptible to root rot, you have to be extra careful while watering it. Do not water it daily and do it only when the topsoil feels a little crumbly.

Temperature and Humidity

The plant thrives well in the temperature range of 16-30 C with ease. Keep it away from A/C vents. Also, it does best in the humidity levels of 40-60% so keeping it on a tray filled with pebbles and water would be a good idea.

Fertilizer

Use a balanced liquid fertilizer, diluted to half of its strength, once in 3-5 weeks. Do refer to the label for instructions. Alternatively, you can also add a bit of worm castings in the soil every 2-3 months.

Re-potting

The plant is not much of a grower so you don’t have to worry about re-potting it every now and then. Re-pot it according to its growth to one size bigger pot than the old one when you see the roots popping out of the drainage hole or you notice them on the topsoil.

Pests and Diseases

The only pest you need to be careful of are spider mites. If you notice fine webbings on the leaves, wipe them away with a solution of insecticidal soap.

To keep most of the potential diseases at bay, avoid overwatering the plant and keep it where it gets plenty of air circulation.
