Can We Drink Water After Eating Banana?

From an Ayurvedic point of view, drinking water right after having a banana is a big no!

Coldwater and bananas show similar characteristics and properties, as both are cold in nature and slow to digest. Thus, having water, especially cold, right after eating a banana, may lead to temporary indigestion.

However, this scenario may differ from person to person, depending upon their body type. Some may witness severe indigestion while some may not.

Why Some People Face indigestion While Some Not?

According to Ayurveda, everything in this world (including humans) is made up of five natural elements that are space, air, fire, water, and earth. The combinations of these five elements lead to a specific dosha in a human body.

There are three kinds of doshas defined in Ayurveda: Vatta, Pitta, and Kapha dosha. One of the doshas is dominant in the body that defines an individuals’ body type, temperament, or personality.

1. Kapha Element: Earth and Water

2. Vatta Element: Space and Air

3. Pitta Element: Fire and Water

Vata is associated with movement like breathing, blinking, muscle, and pulsation of the heart. Pitta, which is fiery in nature, governs metabolic like digestion, absorption, nutrition, metabolism, and body temperature. Kapha governs the supply of water to all body parts, lubricates joints, and maintains immunity.

Since pitta plays a vital role in digestion, people with pitta body types already have an excellent digestive capability, thanks to the fire element. Whereas people with Vata and Kapha dosha body types are more susceptible to severe indigestion issues than pitta body types.

Effects of Having Water Right After Banana

By characteristics, banana is posses Sheeta Guna that literally translates to ‘cold’. Thereby, cold water and banana both have similar cold nature, making them slow to digest. Drinking water, right after eating a banana, slows down the absorption and digestion process.

If you are of pitta dosha body type with a good digestive system, then having water after eating a banana may not cause any major digestive issue. However, people with Vata and Kapha body types are more likely to witness indigestion with the same.

How to Eliminate Indigestion Due to Banana and Water?

Many nutritionists suggest that you should drink water after a gap of 15-20 minutes. This will reduce the mixing of bananas and water in the stomach. Consequently, the chances of indigestion will also decrease.
