Adenium Plant Information

Adenium is a tropical and drought-tolerant succulent, with fleshy grey-green leaves at the tip of the stems. It has a swollen trunk, which gives it a bonsai-like look. The plant also grows trumpet-like flowers in shades of pink, white, purple, and red.

When to Repot Adenium?

When the plant outgrows the current pot, you will see the roots on the topsoil coming out of the bottom drainage hole of the pot. This is the indication that it needs repotting. Usually, most plants require repotting once every two years for the best growth.

The growth of any plant is at its peak during the spring and summer. The plants go into dormancy or minimal growth phase during winters. So, if you re-pot the plant during the cold season, it will shock it.

Hence, the best time to repot the plant is during the slightly warmer weather, when it is growing actively, which is spring and summer for adenium.

Step by Step Guide for Repotting Adenium

1. Selection of the Pot

To re-pot, select a container at least 2-inches wider in diameter than the old one. It should have a drainage hole to flush out the excess water.

Since adenium is succulent, it prefers dry roots over damp conditions. Go for a ceramic planter since they are breathable and absorb the excess water.

2. Choosing the Right Soil for Container

Choose a potting mix designed specifically for succulents and cacti. Besides, you can also mix regular potting soil with perlite/sand in an equal ratio. The addition of perlite makes the soil fast-draining.

3. Removing the Plant for Repotting

Extract the plant by wiggling it slowly while keeping a firm hold at the base. Discard the excess soil from the rootball and snip off any unhealthy and damaged roots using a sanitized shear.

4. Repotting into a New Pot

Fill 1/3 part of the container with the succulent potting mix. Before you re-pot the plant, you need to understand the caudex of the adenium and its crucial role in repotting. It is a thick, engorged, and swollen part at the lower stem.

Re-pot the plant in a way that the caudex remains exposed above the soil line. Once done, fill the remaining pot with the potting mix.

5. Post Repotting Care

Keep the plant in any bright, indirect sunlight, and slowly acclimate it to the full sunlight. Avoid watering the plant for the initial 3-4 days so that the damaged roots have ample time to heal and form callus.
