Requirements for Growing Lithops Plants

Sunlight

These species can tolerate harsh sunlight in their native environment. Therefore, giving them at least 4-5 hours of light and partial shade in the afternoon is the best.

Although they are sun-lovers, deep and direct intense heat for sustained long duration can damage their foliage and cause sunburn.

Water

Lithops are drought resistant and can store water for months in their leaves. The best way to water these plants is to wait till the soil goes dry completely. DO NOT water the plant on a daily basis.

Soil

It is optimum for Lithops to grow in the cactus mix or fast-draining potting soil. Mix a handful or more sand and vermicompost and cow dung manure in the soil to grow them.

Fertilizer

As Lithops Plants are really slow growers, they do not need feeding. To boost the growth, you can mix cow dung manure in the growing medium every 4-6th months. You can also fertilize them using a balanced liquid feed, diluted to half its strength, once in 3-4 months.

Pests & Diseases

Overwatering these small succulents can attract pests like spider mites, thrips, scale insects, mealybugs, aphids, snails, slugs, and root-knot nematodes. Also, mice and other small animals may attempt to eat this plant for its water content. To keep the most potential diseases at bay, avoid overwatering Lithops Plants and avoid wetting their leaves.
