Alcea Rosea Information

Alcea rosea can grow up to 5-6 feet tall and has a long, slender stem with large, heart-shaped leaves that are slightly hairy. The flowers of the hollyhock can be a range of colors, including pink, white, red, yellow, and purple. They are large and showy, with a distinctive trumpet shape and a central column of stamens. Hollyhocks prefer full sun and well-drained soil.

Hollyhocks are biennial, meaning they will bloom in their second year of growth before setting basis and dying. However, they often self-seed and can return year after year in the same spot.

Alcea rosea is commonly grown as an ornamental plant in gardens and landscapes. It has a rich history and cultural significance and can be used for ornamental and medicinal purposes. Hollyhocks are also used in traditional medicine to treat various ailments, including respiratory and digestive problems.

Alcea rosea flowers are edible and can be used to decorate cakes or added to salads for a pop of color. In ancient times, hollyhocks were believed to have magical powers and were often used in rituals and ceremonies. They have also been used in art and literature, including Vincent van Gogh’s famous painting “Hollyhocks” and the children’s book “Miss Rumphius” by Barbara Cooney.

How to Grow Alcea Rosea?

You can grow Alcea rosea or hollyhock from seeds and enjoy their beautiful flowers in your garden.

  • Alcea rosea prefers full sun and well-draining soil, so choose a spot in your garden that receives at least six hours of sunlight daily.
  • They grow best in soil rich in organic matter, so amend your soil with compost or well-rotted manure before planting. Make sure the soil is loose and crumbly, with good drainage.
  • Alcea rosea seeds should be sown indoors 6-8 weeks before or directly in the garden after the last frost. To plant the seeds indoors, fill a seed tray or small pots with seed-starting mix, and press the seeds into the soil. Cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil, and keep them moist but not waterlogged.
  • Keep the soil evenly moist until the seeds have germinated. Once the Alcea rosea seedlings emerge, water them regularly, but be careful not to overwater, as this can lead to root rot.
  • When the Alcea Rosea seedlings are about 3 inches tall, transplant them to larger pots or into the garden. Space them at least 2 feet apart to allow for good air circulation.

Requirements to Grow Alcea Rosea

Sunlight

Alcea rosea prefers full sun, which means at least 5-6 hours of direct sunlight daily. They can tolerate some partial shade, but the more sun they receive, the better they will grow and bloom.

Avoid planting hollyhocks at a spot that gets shade for the most part of the day as it will result in fewer or no flowers.

Soil

Hollyhocks grow best in well-drained, fertile soil that is slightly acidic to neutral (pH 6.0-7.0). Alcea roseas do not like soggy or waterlogged soil, so ensure it has good drainage.

They prefer soil rich in organic matter, so amend your soil with compost or well-rotted manure before planting.

Water

Alcea rosea needs regular watering, especially during hot and dry weather. Water deeply once a week or more often if the soil is dry to the touch. Avoid overwatering, as this can lead to root rot—water at the base of the plant, rather than from overhead, to prevent fungal diseases.

Temperature

Alcea Rosea grows best in temperatures between 18 and 24 degrees Celsius (64 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit). Hollyhocks thrive in cooler temperatures, with ideal night temperatures around 15 degrees Celsius (59 degrees Fahrenheit).

During the summer months, temperatures should not exceed 28 degrees Celsius (82 degrees Fahrenheit). Alcea Rosea can tolerate temperatures as low as 0 degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit).

Fertilizer

For best results, use a balanced liquid fertilizer once in 2 months. This will give Alcea Rosea all the boost it needs to flower more and better. Do make sure to avoid feeding Hollyhocks in winter.

Make sure to water the fertilizer into the soil to ensure that it is absorbed by the roots of the hollyhocks.

Pruning

They do not require much pruning, but you can deadhead Alcea Rosea flowers as they fade to encourage more blooms.

Pests and Diseases

Hollyhocks can be susceptible to aphids, spider mites, and Japanese beetles. To control these pests, spray the plants with a strong jet of water to knock them off, or use insecticidal soap or neem oil. You can also attract beneficial insects like ladybugs and lacewings to your garden to help control pests.

Alcea Rosea can be susceptible to fungal diseases like rust and powdery mildew. To prevent these diseases, water at the base of the plant, avoid overhead watering, and plant in well-drained soil. If necessary, you can also apply a fungicide, but follow the label instructions carefully.
